# 9 Lucius Q. C. Lamar / 9 May 1874 / 9 Oct 1955
[prominent and had businesses in US & Cuba; I believe I am correct in stating that he founded one of the schools or colleges at the University of Havana; husband of Maria Theresa Perez y Chaumont whose first husband was, I believe, VP of Cuba and president of the Federal Reserve; Maria Theresa’s sister, I think I remember, was a great beauty who married a US senator and they embarked on their honeymoon in a private railroad car but the excitement was too much for his heart and he expired in the midst of his exertions - which resulted in explicitly embarrassing ditties being hummed around the Capitol and the Washington social scene for years! I was having dinner with Leila Lamar Sibley (my step-great-grandmother) one evening in the early ‘60's during the Cuban missile crisis when a report on the news showed films of Russian “technicians” housed in Havana in some of the fine homes confiscated by Castro to which Leila, as she watched the report, was moaning “this is all so familiar...”; then as the camera was panning around the former ballroom showing Russians playing ping-pong in the middle of the room and smashed gilded chairs and shattered chandelier in the background, the camera swung around more to concentrate on the huge fireplace-mantel and a life-sized painting above it, as the announcer stated “...and this is the portrait of the former owner ...” and Leila screamed, “Oh, my God, its Maria Theresa...” That shook Leila to her core. I never have found out what happened to Maria Theresa; I am not sure if Leila ever learned more about the end of her sister-in-law. SJ. ]
